July 20 Warm Wednesdays: Featuring Rebecca Dupas

Rebecca Dupas, a native of Louisiana, was influenced by the writings of her mother and sister who shared their work with the young poet. Little did they know, their words would inspire this shy, soft-spoken young girl to begin a journey that would take her from scribbled lyrics on napkins and notebooks to performing and hosting at one of the Nation’s largest and longest running open-mic poetry venues. Although Rebecca is still that reserved, soft-spoken young lady, her poetry is heard “loud and clear” by audiences who have learned to appreciate her subtle, yet powerful messages. Whether it is hosting, performing, or producing, Rebecca Dupas continues to spread a powerful message. Warm Wednesdays is proud to feature one of Baltimore’s most established and talented female spoken word artists: REBECCA DUPAS. A tasteful mix of social conciseness, sensuality, wit and humor, Rebecca is a brilliant wordsmith and captivating performer.

JULY 13 Warm Wednesdays: Shyster

Nominated for the 2007 Philly Hip-Hop Awards Best Poet and for the 2007 Alternative Soul Awards in Best Poet category and Best Spoken Word CD for "Mrs. Betty's Son: The Final Call." I have been blessed many times over since beginning my venture into word art, doing venues and shows from New York to New Jersey, Philly, Delaware to Maryland/D.C. area, meeting and making friends and family out of people I have come in contact with. But I felt I was becoming drained from being inside the open-mics, reciting words of empowerment and social commentary and not being able to get to the people that need to hear it the most. Yet again, God opened more doors for me, inspired me to do community outreach with my word art, giving me access to schools, church events, youth shelters, prisons and youth summits where 90% of the time I was able to give the children something to feel and think about.... Shyster aka Mrs. Betty's Son (after his mother died in 2004 he promised her he would use her name on everything he recorded to keep her memory alive) Co-hosts, Jus Words, every Thursday 9pm-1am at Dowlings Palace, 1310 N. Broad Street in Philly, PA. He is also a member of Poetry-In-Motion and The Master Griot Project[tm].

Nov 17 Warm Wednesdays: Featuring NovaKane

Kane “Novakane” Smego is the Artistic Director of the Sacrificial Poets youth organization. He won the 2008 Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) poetry slam and finished 14th out of 78 poets in the world at the 2008 Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS). The Sacrificial Poets just recently became the forstated. Chapel Hill/ Durham's International Youth Slam Poetry Team was simply known before as the Chapel Hill Slam Team. Recently a Person who was a member of the 2006 team was murdered; Ira Yarmolenko. In her honor the team was renamed the Sacrificial Poets. She is greatly missed and we strive daily to embody the ideals that she believed in. Among these are that; voice is a gift that should be shared, words are weapons that can be used to break or build and finally, a smile can change the world. The Sacrificial Poets recently returned from the International youth competition in Washington D.C. placing top 15. We have also performed at several Obama Rallys recently. We do believe in activism through artistry and believe that poetry is a powerful tool in awakening a "sleep walking" society.

Oct 20 Warm Wednesdays: Featuring Xplicit

Smooth, imaginative, sultry, cunning and eloquent could all be used to describe this poet, but one word is enough XPLICIT. A spoken word artist not originally from St. Louis , but poetically birthed here has taken the scene by storm with his high energy performance combined with an array of word play that has put this poet on the map. With a diverse range of pieces from touching personal experiences, to hard-hitting consciousness, and knee weakening love and erotic poems, his work truly captures the moment and paints a vivid picture in your mind. His growth and maturity as an artist can be found on his Debut CD “Realize and Relax.” The LP combines scintillating instrumentals with thought provoking spoken word to create a unique listening experience. Xplicit’s passion for poetry and spoken word is evident in his devotion and enthusiasm towards the art. The future is bright for this young artist and in his own words “If you have to doubt in your body ignore it, sky is the limit so soar it ! Warm Wednesdays

Warm Wednesdays was established over 10 years ago by a group of men who recognized the immense talent in Baltimore City. Warm Wednesdays has showcased both seasoned professionals and open-mic "virgins" by providing a nurturing atmosphere for some of Baltimore's best.

The venue began with only 6 audience members. It has grown to become the largest and longest running weekly open-mic venue in Baltimore. Its original hosts, Walter Maxfield Jones and The Bassman worked to create a welcoming atmosphere that would afford local and visiting artists the opportunity to "speak." Many of Baltimore's greats have had defining moments on the Warm Wednesdays' stage.

In 2004, then Mayor now Governor O'Mally proclaimed August 25th as Warm Wednesdays Day in Baltimore.

47184_1549250407087_1109889418_31617008_5491889_nWe have been fortunate to have featured many established artists such as Talaam Acey, Lamar Hill, Queen Sheeba, Archie the Messenger, Raheem DeVaughn, Bilal Salaam, and The 5thL. In Spring 2005, The Bassman so graciously "passed the mic" to a member of the Warm Wednesdays family, Rebecca Dupas who after 3 years went on to start her own venue in 2008.

Today, Warm Wednesdays is the longest running open-mic poetry venue in the country. Hosted by Walter Maxfield Jones, it continues to provide a proving ground and a haven for established and up-and-coming artists. Performers such as Ainsley Burrows, Yahzarah, Ndambi, LOVE the poet, E the poet-emcee, Tasha Jones, Droopy the Broke Baller, Lyrical the Lyricist and so many more walk thru the doors of the 5 Seasons.

Warm Wednesdays lives by one credo, and that is "Warm Wednesdays is all about love."
